Mugs Slide

Ode to the Mug

There are a few forms that are a classic specialty in the potters arsenal. Often these forms are small and made for everyday use and may include rice bowls, tea bowls, cups, and saucers. The coffee mug is a form I have repeated many times with many variations. It is a very american form and an object that many people in this country use everyday. I feel that the majority of generic mass produced coffee mugs available to the public have unbalanced forms, uncomfortable handles and sometimes are just too small for the average americans coffee apatite. I have spent a long time crafting a comfortable mug that functions well in the hands, holds ample liquid, and also doubles as a mini sculpture. During the process I make sure to address every detail concerning the form and design of each series as it evolves into another. Likewise, the traditional Japanese Tea Bowl or Chawan is another form I have become very fascinated with because of its historical significance and the humble nature of its form. My intention with my mugs and tea bowls is to provide a small affordable sculpture that the appreciator can use everyday for their favorite beverage. Enjoy!
